This essay argues that a deeper understanding of the historical significance of 17 October, the day which represents the myth of origin of Peronism, can only be achieved if we place the analysis of this popular demonstration in a wide temporal framework. In doing so, it challenges the prevailing notion that this pivotal event represents a complete departure from earlier forms of popular political expression. It contends that traditional ways of depicting the 17 de Octubre often overlook a pre-existing, potent history of popular engagement in the public arena. Moreover, it emphasizes the need to extend the analysis of the making of the political bond between Perón and his supporters to encompass the period up to 1952.
