Resumen

Este ensayo investiga algunos aspectos centrales de las reflexiones políticas y teóricas de W. E. B. Du Bois, el principal referente intelectual y activista afroamericano de la primera mitad del siglo XX. El autor muestra el modo en que en su formación intelectual la práctica de "cruces atlánticos" y el intenso diálogo con la cultura europea lo condujeron progresivamente al descubrimiento de aquello que ha sido llamado por Paul Gilroy "Atlántico Negro". Du Bois desarrolla una vívida "imaginación geográfica" en su continua confrontación con el asunto de la "raza", construyendo espacios políticos originales dentro de los cuales enmarcó crecientemente la experiencia y el activismo político afroamericano. Al respecto, su rol como iniciador del movimiento panafricano es particularmente importante. En esa perspectiva, a partir de una interpretación de su principal obra histórica -Black Reconstruction (1935)- y de sus posiciones políticas durante el New Deal, se sostiene que en la crisis inaugurada por la Gran Depresión Du Bois subraya la relevancia "global" de la derrota del experimento democrático de la "reconstrucción", al tiempo que propone un proyecto singular de radicalización de la democracia que parta del desarrollo y la profundización del poder negro.
